Mauna Kea Observatories: What You Can Actually Visit
Can you tour the telescopes on Mauna Kea? An honest answer, plus what you can actually see and do — the Keck Visitors' Gallery, ʻImiloa Astronomy Center, and the summit itself.
Most people who search “Mauna Kea observatory tour” picture walking into a giant telescope dome and looking through the eyepiece. In 2026, that isn’t possible for the general public. Research telescopes don’t have eyepieces — they feed light to electronic detectors and operate at night for active science programs, not visitors. With one narrow exception for Hawaiʻi residents, no summit observatory offers public interior tours. Here’s what the telescopes on Mauna Kea actually are, what you can genuinely see and do as a visitor, and where to go instead if you want to look through a telescope yourself.
Can You Tour a Mauna Kea Observatory?
The honest answer is no, not in the way most visitors imagine. The only ways to see inside a summit observatory are the Keck Visitors’ Gallery — a small exhibit room with a partial viewing window into the Keck I dome — or the Kamaʻāina Observatory Experience, a free monthly program open only to Hawaiʻi residents. Everyone else sees the domes from the outside.
Part of the confusion is the name itself. The “observatory visitor center” most people are searching for is actually the Maunakea Visitor Information Station (the Onizuka Center for International Astronomy VIS) at 9,200 ft — well below the summit observatories at roughly 13,800 ft. Any car can reach it, and it’s open daily 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. But it hasn’t run public stargazing telescopes since the nightly program was suspended in 2019, and it’s not affiliated with touring the telescopes themselves.
The Telescopes on Mauna Kea Today
In W. M. Keck Observatory’s own current phrasing, Mauna Kea hosts 10 telescopes operated by 9 separate nonprofit observatories — down from 13 after the 2024 removals of the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory and UH Hilo’s Hoku Keʻa teaching telescope, with UKIRT’s decommissioning underway since July 2025 (so one of those ten is winding down science operations even though its structure will stand for years yet).
Two counting notes, because you’ll see other numbers quoted. Older sources — including some pages still live on official university domains — say “13 telescopes” and “eleven countries”; both are frozen snapshots from around 2010 and predate the removals. The country figure in particular is worth ignoring rather than updating: the mix of nations has genuinely churned, with the UK and Australia gone from Gemini and South Korea and Thailand added elsewhere, so any single number is misleading. The facility count is the only figure the observatories themselves currently publish. Here’s the current lineup:
- W. M. Keck Observatory (Keck I & Keck II) — twin 10-meter optical/infrared telescopes, the largest and most scientifically productive of their kind on Earth. Operated by Caltech, the University of California, and NASA. Keck I saw first light in 1990–1992, Keck II in October 1996; each primary mirror is built from 36 hexagonal segments.
- Subaru Telescope — an 8.2-meter optical/infrared telescope run by Japan’s National Astronomical Observatory, first light January 1999, known for its wide-field Hyper Suprime-Cam.
- Gemini North — an 8.1-meter optical/infrared telescope run by an international partnership including the US, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and South Korea. First light June 1999; its twin, Gemini South, sits in Chile.
- Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) — a 3.6-meter optical/infrared telescope operating since 1979, jointly run by Canada, France, and the University of Hawaiʻi.
- NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) — a 3.0-meter infrared telescope established in 1979, originally to support the Voyager missions and still a leading planetary-science facility.
- United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) — a 3.8-meter infrared telescope operating since October 1979; decommissioning began July 2025.
- James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) — a 15-meter submillimeter telescope, the largest single-dish submillimeter facility in the world, operated since 2015 by the East Asian Observatory.
- Submillimeter Array (SMA) — eight 6-meter dishes working as an interferometer, dedicated in 2003 and jointly run by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and Taiwan’s Academia Sinica.
- University of Hawaii 2.2-meter telescope (UH88) — dedicated in 1970, the first large research telescope built on Mauna Kea and still scientifically active.
- Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) Mauna Kea station — a 25-meter radio antenna, one of ten stations spanning the US, providing one of the array’s longest baselines.
Two observatories have been fully removed as part of the mountain’s ongoing telescope reduction: the Caltech Submillimeter Observatory (deconstructed 2022, site restored by mid-2024) and UH Hilo’s Hoku Keʻa teaching telescope (completed May 2024, the first observatory ever decommissioned on Mauna Kea). UKIRT is the third, with decommissioning underway since July 2025.
How to Actually See Inside One
Keck Visitors’ Gallery — open to the public daily, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., per Keck’s own site. (Third-party listings citing “10 a.m.–4 p.m. Monday–Friday,” “Tue–Fri 10–2,” or “9:30–2:00” appear nowhere on any official Keck page — ignore them.) You get gallery exhibits on Keck’s research and operations, two public restrooms, and a viewing area marked by a blue door where you can, in Keck’s words, “step inside our telescope facility and check out one of our twin telescopes, Keck I.” It’s a viewing window, not a tour. Keck actively steers visitors toward its virtual 360° tour “in lieu of a summit visit” to limit traffic, and adds its own health warning: because of the altitude, driving above the VIS isn’t recommended if you’re pregnant, under 13, or have a heart or respiratory condition. Reaching the gallery in person still requires 4WD and the same acclimatization as any summit trip.
Subaru Telescope — used to run free, advance-reservation summit tours (40 minutes, English or Japanese, strict eligibility rules, one-week advance booking). That program was suspended and then officially ended on December 15, 2022, and hasn’t resumed. Subaru now offers a 3D virtual tour and occasional open houses at its Hilo base facility instead — don’t tell anyone they can book a Subaru summit tour in 2026.
Kamaʻāina Observatory Experience (KOE) — the one real exception, and it’s not available to visiting tourists. A free, all-inclusive monthly program organized by the Maunakea Observatories and NSF NOIRLab, open only to Hawaiʻi residents, held the first Saturday of most months (skipping December and January for winter weather). It includes meals at Hale Pōhaku, van transport from the VIS, and an actual visit inside one working telescope — participating observatories have included Keck, CFHT, and Gemini. Tours are limited to 28 guests split into two groups of 14, each visiting one randomly assigned telescope facility. Minimum age is 13, with 13–17-year-olds accompanied by an adult, and every guest over 18 needs a Hawaiʻi State ID or driver’s license as proof of residency. Registration opens exactly one month before each tour date at 5 p.m. HST — slots fill immediately.
Commercial tour operators cannot take clients inside any observatory building. Guided summit tours stop outside the domes for sunset and photography, then descend for stargazing at lower elevation — that’s true of every reputable operator, and it’s the main thing to understand before booking one hoping for an interior visit.
The Maunakea Visitor Information Station (VIS)
The VIS sits at 9,200 ft on the Maunakea Access Road (turn off Saddle Road / Daniel K. Inouye Highway at Milepost 28), open daily 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and reachable by any standard car. It has restrooms, a gift shop, exhibits, and a solar telescope for daytime sun viewing, and it’s the strongly recommended 30-minute acclimatization stop before continuing to the summit (recommended, not legally mandatory — only hikers are required to register). Its once-famous free nightly stargazing program was suspended in 2019 and hasn’t returned in its old form — there are no public-use telescopes at the VIS nightly anymore, though staff will still point out constellations after dark when weather and staffing allow. The station aims to run one general-public reserved stargazing event and one Kamaʻāina-only event each month it can; both are reservation-only and fill within minutes, and the Kamaʻāina edition specifically is on a trial basis that could be paused. Other Experiences You Might Enjoy
Seeing the domes from outside is only part of a Big Island astronomy trip. Many visitors pair the summit with a Hilo-based sunset tour, a Kona-departure stargazing evening, or a Native Hawaiian-guided hike that folds in cultural storytelling alongside the night sky — and if you want the science explained in more depth than a summit stop allows, ʻImiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo (more on that below) is worth building into the same trip.
What You Can Actually See From Outside
From the public summit area, you can see and photograph the domes — spectacular at sunset above the clouds. The Keck twin domes and Subaru’s distinctive cylindrical silver enclosure sit near the IRTF in one cluster; CFHT, Gemini North, and UH88 line the summit ridge; the submillimeter facilities (JCMT, SMA) sit lower in what’s known as “submillimeter valley.” Visitors must stay in designated areas, can’t approach or enter any building (they’re active industrial hard-hat zones), and park only in designated gravel areas. Everyone must leave the summit area 30 minutes after sunset, when it closes to visitors until 30 minutes before sunrise. Cellphone use near the summit is restricted to emergencies to avoid radio interference with the telescopes, and drones are prohibited.
ʻImiloa Astronomy Center — The Best Alternative
ʻImiloa is a world-class science-education center on the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo campus, established in 2006, blending Hawaiian culture, Polynesian wayfinding, and Mauna Kea astronomy across a 12,000-square-foot exhibit hall and the island’s only planetarium, recently upgraded to a high-resolution full-dome system. It’s open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed Mondays plus Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. Admission is $19 for adults, $17 for seniors 65+, and $12 for children 5–12, with under-4s free; Hawaiʻi residents pay less ($14 adult, $12 senior, $9 keiki). That single ticket covers full-day access to both the exhibit hall and the planetarium — there’s no separate planetarium charge. If you see $24.50 quoted for adult admission, that figure appears only on third-party booking sites and doesn’t match ʻImiloa’s own pricing; the same goes for the widely-copied “9 a.m.–5 p.m.” hours, which are half an hour late. For anyone who can’t get inside a real telescope, ʻImiloa is the closest thing to understanding what the observatories actually do, and it’s a genuinely worthwhile stop on a rainy Hilo day.
Why Mauna Kea Is the Best Observatory Site on Earth
The 13,796 ft summit sits above roughly 40% of Earth’s atmosphere and about 90% of its water vapor. A persistent trade-wind inversion layer traps moisture, dust, and pollution below the summit, leaving air that’s exceptionally dry, stable, and transparent — the CFHT Observatory Manual cites 80% usable nights and median seeing of about 0.4 arcsecond, among the best measured anywhere. That extremely low water vapor is what uniquely enables the infrared and submillimeter astronomy that would otherwise be blocked from most sites. The mountain’s near-equatorial latitude (about 20°N) allows observation of both the northern sky and much of the southern sky, and Hawaiʻi County’s lighting ordinance keeps light pollution very low across the island.
Major Discoveries Made From Mauna Kea
- The 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics went in part to Andrea Ghez, who used Keck’s adaptive optics to track stars orbiting the Milky Way’s center, providing conclusive evidence of the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A*. She shared the prize with Reinhard Genzel and Roger Penrose.
- The 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics for discovering the universe’s accelerating expansion relied on Keck spectroscopy from both competing supernova teams to confirm their distant Type Ia supernovae as reliable standard candles.
- The demotion of Pluto traces partly to Mauna Kea: after Eris was discovered in 2005, Keck II’s laser guide star adaptive optics team found its moon Dysnomia that September, letting astronomers weigh Eris at 27% more mass than Pluto — a key trigger for Pluto’s 2006 reclassification.
- Hundreds of exoplanets, largely via Keck’s HIRES spectrograph and the radial-velocity “wobble” method, including the first independent confirmation of an exoplanet and confirmation of the first Earth-sized rocky exoplanet.
- ʻOumuamua, the first known interstellar object to pass through our solar system, was observed from Mauna Kea in 2017.
- GW170817, the neutron-star merger detected via gravitational waves in 2017 — Subaru’s Hyper Suprime-Cam contributed to the follow-up imaging of its kilonova.
The Thirty Meter Telescope: 2026 Status
The Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) is unbuilt, unfunded, and genuinely undecided — but not cancelled. The National Science Foundation’s FY2026 budget request dropped it in favor of the competing Giant Magellan Telescope in Chile, stating TMT “will not advance to the Final Design Phase and will not receive additional commitment of funds from NSF.” Congress then partly overruled that: the FY2026 appropriations bill directs NSF to advance both telescopes to final design review, though explicitly at no additional cost to the federal government. So TMT survives federally without new federal money.
Meanwhile Spain has been courting the project. After an initial invitation and a €400 million offer in July 2025, the Spanish government and the European Investment Bank announced a roughly €1 billion financing framework on July 29, 2026 to build TMT at La Palma in the Canary Islands — structured as €400M from Spain’s CDTI, a €300M EIB loan still subject to final approvals, and up to €300M more from ICO. Crucially, that package is conditional on TMT actually choosing La Palma, and no such decision has been made; a site change reportedly requires a unanimous board vote, and TMT’s own site still lists Maunakea as its preferred site. The consortium has also floated a smaller footprint on the decommissioned Caltech Submillimeter Observatory site on Mauna Kea, an approach backed by Hawaiʻi’s governor and congressional delegation — and opposed by Native Hawaiian groups, who served a cease-and-desist in June 2026 rejecting any Mauna Kea site. Current cost estimates run around $3 billion, with roughly a $1 billion shortfall.
For visitors, the practical answer is simple: there is nothing to see at the TMT site. It was never built, after the 2019 protests halted construction, and NSF’s environmental review runs through the end of 2026.
Governance and Cultural Context
Management of Mauna Kea is transitioning from the University of Hawaiʻi, which has run the mountain since 1968, to the new Mauna Kea Stewardship and Oversight Authority (MKSOA), created under Act 255, signed July 7, 2022. The joint-management period began July 1, 2023, and originally ran to July 1, 2028 — but legislation passed in May 2026 extended it by 18 months, so MKSOA now assumes full management on December 1, 2029, with a management plan due by June 30, 2028 and clauses returning control to UH if those deadlines slip. The university’s master lease and observatory subleases still expire December 31, 2033. MKSOA has eleven voting members (plus the UH Hilo chancellor ex officio, which is why some sources say twelve), including Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners — among them two leaders of the 2019 TMT protests, Joshua Lanakila Mangauil and Michelle “Noe Noe” Wong-Wilson. The Office of Hawaiian Affairs had sued in January 2024 challenging Act 255’s constitutionality, but withdrew that case along with an earlier mismanagement suit in June 2025, citing a need for “a new approach” after years of litigation.
That context matters for anyone visiting: Mauna Kea is the piko, the sacred navel where earth meets sky in Native Hawaiian tradition. The 2019 protests at the base of the access road drew roughly 1,000 people in the first week, swelling to around 2,000, and 38 people — most of them kūpuna, Hawaiian elders — were arrested in a July 17, 2019 sit-in (same-day counts initially reported 33). All charges were ultimately dismissed in 2022, and the state attorney general declined to re-prosecute in January 2023. The protests led directly to the creation of MKSOA and to a commitment to reduce the total number of telescopes on the mountain over time. As a visitor, that’s worth carrying with you at the summit — this is a working scientific site sitting on sacred ground, not a theme park.
Practical Visitor Logistics
4WD is required above the VIS — the road is unpaved, steep, and off-limits to 2WD vehicles, with rangers inspecting on the way up. National rental chains prohibit driving to the summit; Harper Car and Truck Rental, historically the one exception, discontinued the service, leaving a handful of local Jeep specialty rentals as the contractually-permitted self-drive option. Plan at least a 30-minute acclimatization stop at the VIS. State guidance keeps children under 13, pregnant visitors, and anyone with a heart or respiratory condition below the VIS, and bars summit access within 24 hours of scuba diving. Summit temperatures can drop to around 20°F with winds up to roughly 150 mph, and snow and ice close the road frequently in winter — check the Maunakea Weather Center or the road hotline at (808) 935-6268 before heading up. No drones are permitted, cell and radio use is restricted near the telescopes, and everyone must leave the summit 30 minutes after sunset.

When Not to Bother With the Summit
If your dream is looking through a giant research telescope with your own eye, skip the summit — you’ll be disappointed. Keck, Subaru, and the rest have no eyepieces; they feed light to electronic sensors and spectrographs for scientific programs, running remotely at night and staying extremely sensitive to stray light and radio interference. There’s no scenario where the public looks through them. If you want eyepiece views of planets, the Moon, and deep-sky objects, book a stargazing tour that operates below the summit with portable amateur telescopes, or try a Kohala Coast resort program. If it’s the science and culture you’re after rather than the hardware, ʻImiloa is the better trip.
Who Should Do What
If you just want to see the observatories: book a permitted guided summit sunset tour, or self-drive with a genuinely summit-authorized 4WD. You’ll photograph the domes at sunset and can time a stop at the Keck Visitors’ Gallery if your schedule aligns with its 10 a.m.–2:30 p.m. hours. Set expectations correctly — you’re seeing domes from the outside, not telescopes from the inside.
