About This Experience
The team behind this tour includes the astronomer who originally created and operated the Mauna Kea Visitor Center for a decade — guides who have written for leading astronomy publications and worked at world-class observatories. The expertise shows at every stop.
The day portion crosses the Saddle Road between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa — two of the most massive volcanoes on Earth — while your guide narrates the volcanic geology, lava flow history, and endemic flora and fauna of the zone. A state-of-the-art solar telescope lets you safely watch the sun in true color: solar flares, sunspots, and prominences are visible in vivid detail (weather permitting).
After dark, the group moves to a preferred Mauna Kea stargazing location at elevation. A large-aperture Dobsonian telescope — the kind that reveals wide-field views no small scope can match — lets you observe galaxies, nebulae, star clusters, planets, double star systems, and the moon. This tour intentionally does not visit the summit or Visitor Center out of respect for Native Hawaiian concerns; the stargazing location is carefully chosen for minimal light pollution.

Our guide Marcus was very knowledgeable and answered a million questions about Hawaii, culture, lore, and constellations. He had extra jackets for my teens and provided hot chocolate. The telescope was great quality — full sky with very little light pollution.
